Thwake Village Partnership

give online
Thwake, Kenya is a small and isolated village of approximately 4,000 residents located approximately 60 miles southwest of Nairobi, Kenya. The Thwake Village Partnership is a partnership between the Heartland Presbytery and the Kikuyu Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church of East Africa. The mission of Thwake Village Partnership is to collaborate with the people of Thwake to provide the fundamental infrastructure, services and education that they need in order to survive and thrive.

Since our inception in 2010, the Thwake Village Partnership has helped the people of Thwake accomplish many incredible things that will impact the lives of generations of people to come. Members of the Partnership come from a variety of churches in the Heartland Presbytery, including Shawnee Presbyterian, Covenant Presbyterian, Village Presbyterian and Neema Community Church.

Thwake Village Partnership is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization through the Heartland Presbytery PC(USA).

What We Do

Residents of Thwake Girls Home
Thwake Girls’ Home

We’ve helped provide a home for 16 young at-risk girls and a housemother to care for them. The Girls' Home brings security and stability to the most vulnerable population in Thwake, and ensures that these girls will grow up with clean clothes, plenty of food, a stable education and a loving environment. We love and treat each of the girls like a daughter, which means that donor funds help cover all their expenses—housing, food, education, tutoring, health care, supplies, activities, transportation, clothing, etc. Eight of our girls (ages 10–14) reside at the Girls’ Home in Thwake and attend Thwake Primary. Our other eight girls (ages 15–16) attend high-school boarding schools outside of Thwake. We have hired two local teachers to tutor all the girls and they are doing well in their studies.

During his October 2021 visit, Rev. Dr. David Nzioka recognized the need to freshen up the Girls’ Home, so we sent funds to paint the house and purchase new furniture. We are currently raising money to grow our program and invite our high-school-aged girls to attend college in Kansas City. Our girls are ecstatic and full of new hope for their future.

Thwake Health Clinic

Before the clinic was established, healthcare was non-existent to Thwake’s 4,000 residents. Despite the many hurdles created by the pandemic, our dedicated medical team has continued to provide free 24/7/365 medical care to approx. 700 patients each month. During much of Covid, the Kenyan government suspended their regular supply of medications to the clinic. With donor funds, Thwake Village Partnership has been able to purchase life-saving medications and supplies. Our medical team also hosted regular community health clinics (pictured above) with doctors, nurses, dentists, ophthalmologists and other specialists to serve as many residents as possible. Your support makes this possible!

Thwake Presbyterian Church

Our church in Thwake is thriving and being led by a wonderful evangelist, Elder Sabina (pictured 3rd from left with other Thwake Village Partnership employees). Elder Sabina regularly visits communities surrounding Thwake to introduce new people to the Thwake Church and invite them to attend services. The PCEA also hired a Kamba pastor for our “mother church” in Wote and he comes to Thwake to preach at least once a month. The ruling elders of the church provide guidance and counsel to our eight staff members and keep us apprised of the day-to-day operations in our compound. We recently sent funds to upgrade the fences and gates to help secure the property and purchased a small house in Ndauni, Kenya as a new site to hold regular services. With donor support, Thwake Village Partnership is working hard to grow our outreach.

Other projects

Water access: We have installed the first-ever fresh water well in Thwake. The residents of Thwake were accustomed to walking miles each day to retrieve fresh water, which caused a major toll on their safety, healthcare and quality of life.

Education: Our partnership has helped stock Thwake's primary and secondary school with furniture, supplies and books.
