WORSHIP SERVICES
Go to villagepres.org/online to join the livestream of Village worship services.
Palm Sunday, April 5 - Livestream worship service at 9:30 a.m.
Palm Sunday or Passion Sunday begins our Holy Week or Passion Week. When Jesus entered Jerusalem, people were so excited that they stripped branches from nearby trees and waved them and laid them on the road, hence the name “Palm Sunday.” To lay down palm branches and cloaks was a high honor afforded to royalty and governors and victors returning from war. Since Jerusalem was an occupied city, the Romans would often force the Jews to lay down palm branches and cloaks for their dignitaries and to stand there welcoming them. It was humiliating. So, it is significant that the people are honoring Jesus by their own accord.
You may not have palm branches available to you. If you do not, consider waving a cloth as people did for Jesus or create a palm leaf using paper and scissors. Wave them and say “Hosanna” which translates “save us” but was more likely used as a shout of praise.
Maundy Thursday, April 9 - Livestream worship service at 7 p.m.
The word “maundy” comes from the Latin word “mandatum” from which we get the word “mandate.” In John 13: 34, Jesus gives his disciples a new commandment or mandate: just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. We will consider how we are to love as Jesus loved during a time of social-distancing.
To prepare for this service, have bread and either juice or wine. We will together share communion from our different places and different tables remembering that our different tables are really part of the one expansive table of Jesus Christ, where all are loved and all are welcome.
Good Friday, April 10 - Live stream worship service at 7 p.m.
Good Friday is about the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Some Christian traditions call this Holy Friday or Black Friday. The service is focused on Jesus’ suffering and death so the tone is solemn and somber.
In preparation for this service, consider darkening some or all of the lights in your room. We will use eight candles in this service. If you have eight candles in your home, you are welcome to use them during this time of worship. We will light all of them at the beginning of the service, then extinguish them one-by-one after each scripture reading. If you have only one candle, you may light it at the beginning of the service. Keep it lit until the eighth reading of scripture, then extinguish it. After the service is over, sit in silence for a few minutes and remember the sacrifice of Jesus.
Easter Sunday, April 12 - Christ is Risen! Livestream worship service at 9:30 a.m.
This glorious day signals the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. It concludes Holy Week or Passion Week and the 40 days of Lent. On a usual Sunday, over 3,200 will worship in one of the six Easter services for Village Presbyterian Church. This is the first Sunday we will not have worship in the sanctuary in our 71-year history. Churches around the globe are calling this the first “Digital Easter” in the history of Christianity. Our Senior Pastor Tom Are reminds us that the church is not confined to the walls of a building. So, we will gather with Christians in every place and in every time to celebrate Jesus Christ’s triumph over death and to say the words of the Easter proclamation: Christ is risen! He is risen indeed!
We'll be singing Hymn No. 232 - Jesus Christ is Risen Today - Download the Hymn Music

HOLY WEEK WORSHIP STUDY FOR ADULTS WRITTEN BY REV. DR. RODGER NISHIOKA
Holy Week is the most sacred seven days of the year for the Christian journey. In these days following Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, we walk with him through his encounters with the people of the city, the religious leaders, and his own friends and followers. We also read about his final lessons and teachings before he shares a last supper with his disciples and then is arrested, convicted, tortured and killed. We grieve with the whole world at the death of Jesus Christ and then, surprised and awe struck, we encounter him as our resurrected Lord and Savior.
I invite you to take this journey of the last week of Jesus’ life as told to us in John’s Gospel. As you prepare for this Holy Week study, find a place you can be comfortable. Light a candle as a symbol of illumination. Have your Bible ready.
