LET'S CELEBRATE! – 12:15 P.M. SUNDAY, MAY 1
Please join us Sunday, May 1, following the 11 a.m. worship service, as we celebrate the completion of the Sanctuary and Welcome Center projects of the Now & Tomorrow, Village Church campaign! There will be a dedication ceremony at 12:15 p.m. led by Rev. Tom Are. Items from the time capsule placed in 1954 as well as items that will be placed in a new time capsule representing Village Church today will be on display all morning. Both time capsules will be placed in the new cornerstone at the top of the stairs at the new west entry.
Judy Cooper, chair of the Village Church Heritage Committee, shares the history of our first time capsule and what will be placed in our new time capsule representing the church today.
The cornerstone, which read “The Village Church, United Presbyterian, Founded 1949, set in 1954," was to be removed from the existing building last year. The Heritage Committee was hoping to find a time capsule behind it. We were quite excited when indeed it was there! The box was wrapped in copper and soldered shut!
As we gathered for our monthly meeting on July 6, 2015, George Darrington cut the copper and with great anticipation we opened the box. We all chuckled to see that while the box was soldered shut, the key was taped on top. The contents included a Thanksgiving day worship bulletin, a church newsletter, a report of the progress of Sunday School, an Annual Report to the congregation, a brief history of the church, a book of Government and Worship of the church, a Presbyterian Union brochure, copies of sermons, a Bible and a cross.
The committee decided at that time that we would like to have a new cornerstone and an updated time capsule to place in the wall when the construction on the addition was completed. Bob Mullett secured a box from the Commercial Bank and we began to gather information that would offer a glimpse of the Village Presbyterian Church in the 21st Century. After much discussion and research, the contents to be placed behind the new Cornerstone, which reads "The Village Presbyterian Church, Est. 1949" will include the following:
Sermons, and a letter from Rev. Tom Are, senior pastor, Glory to God Hymnal, Welcome Visitor packet, 66th Annual Congregational Meeting Report, Church Worship Bulletin May 1, 2016, Endowment Trust Report, Presbyterian Women Information Sheet, Visiting Scholar fliers for 2015 and 2016, Operation Breakthrough, Children and Family Ministry. Village Church Preschool, Village Church Child and Family Development Center, Sunday Church School Curriculum, Community Outreach Booklet, Village Community Garden Sheet, Village Presbyterian Youth Booklet, Boy Scout Troop 91 information, a Good News newsletter, Now & Tomorrow Campaign Brochure, Care and Counseling Information Sheet, Stephen Ministers, Village Presbyterian Church Timeline, Adult Ministry Information, Adult Sunday Morning Classes, Village U Fall 2015 Catalog, Introductions to three new pastors Rev. Len Carrell, Rev. Hallie Hottle, Dr. Rodger Nishioka, and a photo album depicting folks enjoying activities of Village Church.
The hope of the Heritage Committee is that whenever this new time capsule is opened in the future, folks will know what our journey together was like at Village Presbyterian Church in 2015-16.
